The 2006 vintage
Weather conditions
2006 was an almost perfect year for producing a great vintage in the Rhône Valley. With a cold, dry winter, ideal for the vines to rest, and a relatively wet, mild spring, the conditions were perfect for good bud-break and rapid growth of the young shoots.
During the summer, drought alternated with milder periods and cool nights in August. These conditions favoured optimal ripening, silky tannins and a well-structured balance, with perfectly healthy grapes.
Tasting notes
The nose is salivating and deep, with subtle notes of oriental spices, black truffle, blackberry, cedar and sultana. The well-supported tannins give way to an intense velvetiness that lingers sensually. The structure strikes a balance between dense, powerful substance and a diversity of mature aromas.
Glass-staining ruby. Powerful scents of red and dark berry preserves, smoked meat, violet and minerals offer impressive clarity and expand in the glass. Velvety in texture, with deep, liqueur-like red berry flavors, gentle tannins and a strong undercurrent of lively minerals. The smoky note repeats strongly on the lush, seductively sweet finish. Extremely appealing even now, but this really deserves a chance to sleep for at least another decade.

The Producer
Domaines Paul Jaboulet Aîné is one of Rhone's most well-known wineries. It's flagship wine is the Hermitage La Chapelle, named after the chapel overlooking the vineyard. Founded in the early 19th century, it was a family-owned domaine until it was sold to the Frey family, who are proprietors of Chateau La Lagune and Champagne Billecart-Salmon.
