The 2013 vintage

Weather Conditions

Winter is regularly and alternatively swept by rainfalls and frost. Spring is wet and cold. The vineyard has some difficulties to start growing. The blooming happens with a two weeks delay. The yield has been cut by 30%. Finally, the heat is coming in July. Unfortunately, at the same time, we had some hailstorms on the vineyard in the southern part of the Crozes-Hermitage appellation. August is very sunny. Despite this fact, we start picking two weeks later than the average, until the 12th of October, just before the autumn rainfalls start.

Tasting notes

The Méal parcel brings all the richness of its constitution here: the bouquet bursts from the glass delivering accents of blackcurrant, liquorice nuanced with a touch of Sichuan pepper. The palate perfectly combines aromatic intensity and tannic finesse, making this wine one of France’s absolute benchmarks for 2013! Decant 2 hours before serving.

From a cooler, more challenging vintage for the Rhône, yet one that was certainly better in the north than the south, the 2013 Hermitage La Chapelle reveals a vivid purple hue as well as beautiful, cooler climate black raspberries, mulberries, white pepper, crushed stone, and spicy, sandalwood-like aromas and flavors. Medium to full-bodied on the palate, it exudes class and elegance, with silky tannins, perfect balance, and a great finish. I can't say it's a classic La Chapelle, as the usual smoky, meaty, soy-like nuances are missing, but this is just a complete, gorgeous Hermitage that will evolve gracefully over the coming 20-25 years.

Bright purple. Sexy, highly perfumed scents of ripe boysenberry, cherry cola, smoky Indian spices and potpourri take on a vibrant mineral quality in the glass. Smooth, expansive and impressively deep, showing a surprisingly delicate touch to the sweet black and blue fruit, floral pastille and spicecake flavors. Smooth, slow-building tannins come up slowly and add focus to an extremely long, juicy, mineral- and floral-driven finish.

The Producer

Domaines Paul Jaboulet Aîné is one of Rhone's most well-known wineries. It's flagship wine is the Hermitage La Chapelle, named after the chapel overlooking the vineyard. Founded in the early 19th century, it was a family-owned domaine until it was sold to the Frey family, who are proprietors of Chateau La Lagune and Champagne Billecart-Salmon.
