Opus One Winery

In 1970, Opus One began as an idea in the brilliant minds of Baron Philippe de Rothschild of Bordeaux and Robert Mondavi of Napa Valley.

This idea for a joint venture lay dormant, like a winter vine before budbreak, until 1978, when they decided the time had come to bring their dream to fruition. Meeting at Chateau Mouton Rothschild, the founders established their plan in one hour: they would focus exclusively on making one exceptional wine, a Bordeaux-style blend; it would be sourced from Napa Valley grapes, and made by their respective French and American winemakers working together.

The Backgrounds of Baron Philippe and Robert Mondavi couldn't have been more different. Yet, they came together as equals with their shared passion for wine, their success in producing exceptional wines, and their desire to explore new possibilities.

The joint venture wine was made at Robert Mondavi Winery until 1991 when the new Opus One Winery was completed. The winery, like the wine, joins Old World and New World aesthetics, as well as provides the marriage of traditional gravity-flow-design with state-of-the-art innovation.
