A sensational Cornas that readers shouldn't miss is the 2013 Cornas Le Vallon de l'Aigle (which translates to "The Valley of the Eagle"); it comes from a single, south-facing parcel of old vines and is only made in top vintages. Its inky purple color is followed by a sensational perfume of graphite, crushed rocks/wet granite, game-like meats and ample dark fruits. This gives way to a medium to full-bodied red that has an incredible, mouth-filling texture, no hard edges, fine tannin and a great finish. I hate to admit that this is the first time I've tasted this wine, but it's one serious Cornas that's up with the crème de la crème of the vintage!

This family-run estate continues to fashion a bevy of brilliant Cornas, St Péray, and value priced Côtes du Rhônes and VDPs. While I wasn’t able to taste any of their 2014 Cornas from barrel, their 2013s show the fresher, more focused and mineral-laced purity of the vintage, yet have terrific depth of fruit and mid-palate concentration. They all have enough fruit and texture to offer plenty of pleasure today, yet I’ve no doubt they’ll age gracefully as well.
